Travel Journalist Fakes Pregnancy to Avoid Excess Fees at the Airport and Almost Gets Away with It

Surely, everyone wants to save when they go traveling.  And although it is apparent that traveling is not a very cheap hobby, frequent travelers often have a few tricks up their sleeves.  Unusual as some these tricks seem to be, we can definitely say that these people definitely have their own travel goals.

How did she do it?

Travel journalist and frequent flier Rebecca Andrews has recently shown proof of this by pretending to be pregnant to get away with excess baggage fees.  On a domestic flight in Australia carried by Jetstar, Andrews created a baby bump out of her clothes and a few electronics that she wasn’t able to fit in her luggage.  She also wore a stretchable jumpsuit that allowed her to keep her laptop down her back.

All these, she proudly demonstrated on a video she posted on her Instagram before her flight.

“I have a small frame and decided pretending to be preggo was the most believable route to a successful hack,” Andrews argued.  “But in all seriousness, I think it is the laziest idea I have ever had — a woman’s body can create human life, so exploiting this unique ability we have to save myself $60 was just obvious. It’s quite an uncreative hack, really.”

How did they catch her?

Andrews also almost got away with it.  But she was the last person to board the flight so the staff was paying attention to her as she explained.  “Collectively, they weighed my bag, and with smiles gave me the all-clear. But as I walked down the gangway, I dropped my ticket and made a noise. So they all looked at me again,” she said. “As I bent over to pick up the ticket, the shape of my laptop down my back suddenly became apparent.”

She then had to pay the excess baggage fee after all.  Andrews goes on to say that she wasn’t at all embarrassed with what happened.  In fact, she says that she felt like a badass—a “hot pregnant badass” at that.

As a frequent traveler, Andrews admits to having some travel hacks to save some money.  She’s had double- and triple-layered her clothes many times, and she has definitely pretended to be pregnant as well.  This is, however, the first time she did the whole skit with a laptop involved.

The airline’s response

Of course, this trick might seem new to some of us, but Jetstar’s spokesperson says that they have seen about every trick in the book.  “While we appreciate the creativity, our team [is] pretty wise to all the tricks, and most of our customers find it more comfortable to pay a little bit more for an extra 3 kilos [nearly 7 pounds] of carry-on.”
