Food Tourism: Who Wants In?

“Food tourism is the act of traveling for a taste of place in order to get a sense of place.”

Erik Wolf, Executive Director, World Food Travel Association

Food tourism, or as others refer to it, culinary tourism, is looking at your love of food as the main reason to travel.  It is going further than just your neighborhood or the nearest mall to find good food.

How can I be a food tourist?

To some people, getting to know the food from different places is then getting to know the people and their culture.

And be honest, you know you want to do this.  So while the world is full of food tourists out there, keep in mind that it’s never too late to start.

If you haven’t started one yet (which I highly doubt), then it’s best to make a bucket list.  The first thing to ask yourself is “where do you find your favorite food?”

It is important to start yourself with something you’ll surely love.  That way, you’ll know that you made the right decision venturing into something new.

For example, you love pasta.  But the only times you’ve had pasta are when you go to a local restaurant or when you buy a pack of it yourself.  So you decide to become a food tourist and put Italy on your list first. There you’ll find handmade pasta with that perfect al dente bite mixed in with freshly made sauce of your choice.  Now, you’re in love with pasta on a whole new level.

And that’s just one thing.  You’ve still got the whole world to put on your plate.

Do I need to be ‘fancy’ as a food tourist?

The answer to that is simply no.  You may think that food tourists all want to eat gourmet meals or check out fine dining experiences.

But even though this may sound enticing, do not be fooled.  In fact, one way to find authentic and traditional food from a new place is by looking for their street food.

In many countries like Malaysia and Thailand, a lot of these street foods are offered in food parks and night markets that are open to everyone.

Just keep in mind that you don’t really have to look for high-end places to have a taste of a country’s culture, and you won’t have to go through the hassle of reserving seats at an expensive restaurant or, what not.
