Disaster Averted: Pilot Safely Lands Plane After the Engine Started Emitting Flames

Just a few moments after Philippine Airlines flight 113 took off from Los Angeles bound to Manila last Thursday morning (LA local time), a few passengers noticed fire being spat out of the right wing of the plane.

Passerby, Andrew Blake Eames posted a video he caught on Twitter, with caption “Is a plane supposed to spew flames?” while initially thinking that the carrier was American Airlines.

Fortunately, Captain Triston Simeon was able to turn the plane around and land the plane successfully, keeping all 342 passengers and 18 crew members safe. Philippine Airlines spokesperson Cielo Villaluna later on commended Cpt. Simeon and his team on Facebook.

Philippine Airlines also released a statement later that day, after learning that the plane had undergone engine failure shortly after taking off. “We greatly appreciate the calmness and patience of our PR113 passengers, who cooperated well with our cabin crew during the flight and the emergency landing,” stated the airline.
