Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio City local government has recently announced that they are working with the Department of Transportation to look into proposals on installing a cable car system that would connect the city to the municipality of La Union.
City Mayor Benjamin Magalong recently had a meeting with Secretary Arthur Tugade of the Department of Transportation where Tugade offered to help set up the system. Being the first in the country if approved, conceptual designs will be provided for review before proceeding with execution of the project.
In a report from the City’s official website, it was stated that the proposal was a feasibility study worth 26 million pesos, funded by the French government.
Aside from the cable car system, the Department of Transportation also offered to assist the city government and revisit the idea of putting up a monorail system, previously proposed by the Department of Science and Technology, Cordillera a few years ago.
The first proposed monorail system will run a 5.2-kilometer line from La Trinidad to Slaughterhouse Compound in Baguio City and the other will run a 2.1-kilometer line from the Bonifacio rotunda to SM City Baguio. In a pre-feasibility study, the first proposal would cost about 4 billion pesos and the second one would cost about 3 billion pesos.
